The Telfed Modi’in regional committee will be holding a mass “Challah Bake” on November 10th, 2016.

Following a request from the SAZF - our sister organisation in South Africa, Telfed volunteer Gidon Katz contacted Raphael Herbst (the nephew of Shlomo Miller Z”L, who was killed in 2004) and asked him to please represent the families of Southern African fallen soldiers in Israel’s wars, at the Yom Ha’Zikaron ceremony in Johannesburg.
The ceremony will be held on May 10th, 2016 at 18.30 at the Yeshiva College Campus.

Telfed hosted Wendy Kahn, the National Director of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.

On 23 February 2016 Telfed's Social Worker, Ariela Siegel, personally met with 16 student Olim from South Africa, Australia and Holland at Ulpan Etzion in Jerusalem.

Telfed was honoured to welcome members of the “Knesset Aliyah, Klita and Diaspora Committee” from the Israeli Parliament at the Telfed offices in Ra’anana this month. Three Members of Parliament attended the meeting: MPs Avraham Nagosa, Michael Oren and Yoel Razbozov. 

Telfed was invited by Jerusalem Mayor, Nir Barkat, to represent the Anglo-Saxon Olim Community at a New Year’s party in Jerusalem City Hall.

Over 150 eager and interested English-speaking olim crammed into the hall at Beit Ariela in Tel Aviv to listen to presentations from the Foreign Ministry on the potential opportunities for work in the foreign service.

On thursday evening, February 4th 2016, Telfed (the South African Zionist Federation - Israel) held its National Bursary Ceremony in Jerusalem City Hall, hosted by Mayor Nir Barkat. An incredible 400 students, their friends and families attended the event, in which bursaries and scholarships were presented to the young students, in an ongoing effort to build and educate Israeli society.

Some of the young Jerusalem community got together with former South African Rav Shaliach Natan Alexander for a series of three lessons on the topic of 'Sexuality'. 

 

This week Telfed welcomed a group of 20 priests from different areas in South Africa who visited Israel as part of a fact-finding trip organised by "Bridges for Peace SA" – a Zionist Christian Organisation in South Africa.

With a view to exploring maximum networking opportunities on behalf of new and veteran olim, Telfed's Employment Advisor Sharon Bernstein and CEO Dorron Kline braved a freezing and rainy morning to attend an employment fair in Tel Aviv, organised by Shine and Company.
 

Telfed was invited by the Chairman of Partnership Together Beit–Shemesh/ Mateh Yehudah, Aviva Chalvi to address a visiting group of students from Cape Town (and one from Johannesburg), participating in the “I Heart Israel” programme. 

Telfed members are invited to donate surplus items, which are in good, clean condition. There is a store room at Telfed offices in Ra'anana where items donated can be left. Alternatively, items can be dropped at the shop during the business hours specified below.
 
The shop is located at 220 Netzach Israel, Mevaseret Zion, and is open for business on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3.00pm - 6.00pm.

The shabbaton was a fantastic display to all our visitors how together as Olim we look out for each other and more importantly that life as a young Oleh in Israel is not just a dream, it is a reality.

A capacity crowd of some 250 people packed the dining room at Bet Protea for the recent evening to pay tribute to the memory of Maurice Ostroff. The evening was organized by Truth be Told (TbT) – an advocacy group – of which Maurice was a co-founder.

At the closing Executive meeting of 2015 Telfed honored its outgoing Chairman Dave Bloom, together with three outgoing chairmen from major committees: Allan Feinblum, Joe Hallis and Zvi Green. 

Members of the Telfed executive and staff, together with the Chairman of Keren Beth Protea Monty Hilkowitz and Beth Protea Committee Members gathered at the Telfed office in Raanana this past week for a celebration of the support extended to Beth Protea from the Samuel and Pauline Sussman Memorial Trust via Telfed, who have been administrating the Trust for over 30 years.  

Telfed's Chairman, CEO, staff and volunteers on the ISRENTCO committee (Telfed's housing company) met with students from South Africa currently studying at the IDC in Herzliya in order to hear first-hand what the housing needs of the students are and how Telfed can best assist in this sphere. This meeting is one of a series of fact-finding meetings held before the start of the SASI programme at the IDC, which will begin next academic year. 

TBT presents a tribute evening for Maurice Ostroff (z’l): Panel discussion. In the spirit of Maurice - this untiring warrior for Israel – TbT is proud to present a Panel Discussion entitled: “The New Battle Landscape - The War of Words against Israel” on Sunday 10th January, 2016 at Beth Protea, 5 Asher Barash Street, Herzliya, 7.30pm.  This evening will also launch the establishment of the “Maurice Ostroff Bursary for the study of Communications” which will be awarded to a worthy student.
 

A group of women, including Telfed staff members Tasha Elliston, Dana Ben Chail and Debbie Friedman, gathered in the Telfed Moadon, Raanana, for the first in a 4 part course for women on “Personal Safety.”

Michal Merten and Sharon Bernstein, representing Telfed's Employment division, travelled to the Young Olim Hub in Tel Aviv this December to attend a career/employment panel discussion hosted by Jill Reinardt, Director of Projects for English-speaking Olim Residents from Tel Aviv Municipality.

TECI (Telfed’s Ethiopian Community Initiative) has officially opened a new household shop in the Mevaseret Zion Absorption Center, in co-operation with the Jewish Agency.  TECI's aim is to empower the 120,000+ citizens of Ethiopian descent living in Israel, some 800 of whom reside in this Absorption Centre and some of whom will be employed in the shop.
 
We are urgently looking for volunteers to help:
  • To staff the shop for 3 hours a week, either on Sun,Tue or Thur AND/OR
  • To help distribute flyers in and around Mevaseret

The grand opening took place on 10th December 2015 and was attended by flocks of interested neighbours and community members.  Come by and check out some great deals!

Fonda Dubb of the Eilat regional Committee organized a fabulous boat trip and get together this month.  A total of 42 people, 8 of whom were new to Telfed events, turned up for the enjoyable trip.

Telfed will be offering a personal safety course for women which will be spread across 4 sessions of two hours each. (There will be two courses available for different age groups).

On Sunday 15 November, Telfed Netanya held their AGM which was attended by Telfed's Chairman Maish Isaacson,and Head of Telfed Volunteerism, Community projects and Events, Dana Ben Chail. Participants also enjoyed a talk by Peter Bailey on "the role of the Jews in the military in South Africa and other countries".

Some 130 students, together with Telfed staff members, PRAS families and other members of the community gathered at the IDC in Herzliya on Friday 13th November for the grand opening ceremony of the 2015/2016 PRAS Student Mentoring Bursary Programme.

Telfed national Youth committee are offering a series of shiurim (lectures) in Jerusalem on the theme of relationships and sexuality.

The annual National Civic remembrance Sunday service was held on Sunday 8 November 2015, at the Cenotaph on Beyers Naudé Square in Harrison Street. The National Remembrance service honours all South Africans who made the supreme sacrifice for their country in all wars and conflicts, including the struggle for democracy.  In support of the overall message “Unification and Nation-Building”, the event honours military veterans representing all communities in South Africa.

 
As part of Telfed on the Move's outreach to other communities, Telfed Netantya held their first community project get-together at the Hatzer Nishim centre in the Vatikin area of Netanya. This centre for young girls and women from the Ethiopian community provides a place where they can socialize, watch TV, get a hot meal, have their hair done for free and get advice from the resident social workers.

A group of young  Southern Africans and Australians, including Daniel Winer, Head of the Telfed national Youth committee, decide to do something to try and "reignite" the streets of Jerusalem, helping to bring back the lively atmosphere and vibe which was present before the current wave of terror.

Telfed – The South African Zionist Federation (Israel) was pleased and honoured to receive a request to provide training in Klita services to the Dutch Olim Society ארגון עולי הולנד -  (IOH). An agreement of cooperation was signed at the Knesset on Monday 9th November in the presence of senior officials of the Ministry of Absorption, Directorate members of the two organisations and staff. 

On Thursday, Nov. 5th Telfed organized a special event at which two professionals shared their knowledge and experience on coping with stressful situations.

The Telfed Youth Committee held its first Shabbat get away on 23-24 Novelber, the weekend of the Shabbat project. The hugely successful event was attended by 57 young Olim and was a fanatstic debut Shabbaton for the Youth Committee. 

Last Thursday Modiin had the pleasure of participating in The Shabbat Project 2015. 150 ladies including their daughters and granddaughters stood together for the Huge International Challah Bake.

The programme aims to provide a comprehensive and supervised framework of support for young Jewish South African students interested in studying in Israel.

Telfed was invited to attend the 30th world conference of World Mizrachi, which was held at the end of October at the Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem

Dorron Kline represented Telfed at a memorial service on Kibbutz Yizreel which has taken place annually for the past 42 years to honour the memories of Neil Freed and David (Dudi) Silbowitz, who were killed in action during the Yom Kippur war, on Simchat Torah in 1973. 

Telfed has partnered with the Shivtei Yisrael Community in Raanana, in order to promote the Shabbat Project to the community. The concept behind the Shabbos project is that for one week, all Jews the world over will observe the Sabbath together. Here is a list of events taking place in Raanana and Modiin for the 2015 Shabbos project on 22-24 October. 

200 people from Israel and from other parts of the world collected on Kibbutz Zora for a magnificent two day 60's Habonim reunion.

Israel, Britain and the Commonwealth Association (IBCA) will be holding the annual Balfour Dinner on 9th November 2015.

On November 9 the Program "At Home Together" of Jewish Agency is organizing an Employment fair in Haifa. Fair participants will include employers from a wide range of fields and industry. It is recommended that you bring several copies of your resume in English and Hebrew to the event!

Telfed kicked off its Klita cooperation with Irgun Oleh Holland this Sukkot with the hosting of a Dutch lone soldier for the festival.  

Telfed was invited by the Mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai, to a special gathering to toast the New Year. The mayor personally expressed his appreciation to Telfed for encouraging Aliyah to the city by providing below market rate rentals to Olim in the two Telfed buildings in Amishav Street.

Few people realize how much of the day-to-day behind the scenes office work at Telfed is actually performed by office volunteers who are a vital source of support to our staff and without whose help we could not manage our work nearly as well. The office volunteers were honoured at a scrumptious breakfast given in their honour on 18th August.

A superb summer picnic was held at the Telfed Amishav buildings in Tel Aviv. It was lovely to officially meet the new property manager of ISRENTCO, Dafna Rosenfeld, together with the veteran Telfed staff members - Susan Sharon and Dorron Kline.

Telfed's CEO, Dorron Kline, met with the Diller Teens Leadership participants last week in Beit Shemesh.  Twenty 10th and 11th graders from Johannesburg, met up with twenty of their counterparts from Beit Shemesh and Mateh Yehudah.
 
 
Despite the heat wave on the morning of the 7th August, more than 60 people were arriving from all parts of Israel to Kibbutz Hasolelim to attend the Bnei Zion Reunion.

A South African style “braai” was held on 20 August 2015 on the Rishon le’Zion beach.

This year, for the third year in a row, TECI (Telfed Ethiopian Community Initiative) has sponsored a group of  Ethiopian families to enable them to attend the YAHALOM Family Summer Camp which provides a rare opportunity for Ethiopian, Russian speaking and other Israeli families to share an intensive Jewish family experience in Jerusalem.

When Jewish Agency Shlichim are sent to South Africa, Telfed forms an integral part of their pre-Shlichut training.

A meeting took place on Sunday 19 July at the Telfed Raanana building between mebers of the public and three Southern African veteran Olim who have risen to high positions in the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Lironne Bar Sadeh – Israeli Ambassador to Latvia; Meron Reuben –Chief of State Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Paul Hirschson – Israeli ambassador to Senegal, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau & Cape Verde.  
The public are invited to meet three Southern African veteran Olim who have risen to positions of great importance in the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Lironne Bar Sadeh – Israeli Ambassador to Latvia; Meron Reuben –Chief of State Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Paul Hirschson – Israeli ambassador to Senegal, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau & Cape Verde.  Meeting will take place on Sunday 19 July at the Telfed Raanana building.
 

On Sunday morning 28 June, Telfed representatives, Susan Sharon – Klita Counselor and Dorron Kline – CEO, participated in the Israel Centre "Emigr8 Aliyah Q&A Video Conference" together with representatives of the Jewish Agency and the Ministry of Absorption.

Telfed hosted a delegation of young South African leaders brought to Israel by SAIF (South Africa Israel Forum) on 7 July 2015. The meeting, which was open to members of the public, comprised much frank discussion and the asking of probing questions and was an eye-opening experience for all.   

This month, Telfed was privileged to host from Cape Town Michele and Philip Krawitz, Chairman of the Board of the United Jewish Campaign (UJC).
 
PRAS - Telfed's flagship programme held its closing seminar for the 2014/15 academic year on 19th June 2015 at the IDC Hertzliya.The event was a fitting end to another successful year for PRAS!
 

On Friday 26th June the city of Tel Aviv hosted an "Olim Business Conference" at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque. Hundreds of new Olim from North America, Europe, South Africa and Australia attended. Dorron Kline addressed the audience on the topic of "Building your career in Israel".

The tour to the North arranged by Telfed on 30th June was a resounding success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all the participants who filled the tour bus to capacity – a full complement of fifty Telfed tourists. 

Last night at Beth Protea it was a warm, entertaining evening of personal and intimate recollections of the enriching relationship of  South African Jewry with  Mandela....
Organised by Beth Protea, TbT, WITS Alumni and Telfed, the synagogue was packed to capacity with residents and as well as the general Southern African public.

Telfed hosted South African and Australian olim who were invited on a recent Wednesday evening to a “taste and comment” session of the new flavoured borewors, dry wors and biltong provided by  Meatland.

Telfed was invited to attend the June 2015 Board of Governors gathering of the Jewish Agency at the David Intercontinental Hotel in Tel Aviv. CEO, Dorron Kline addressed two sessions - Aliyah and Activism. "Aliyah without good Klita is an anathema," said Dorron. "There are 23 Olim organisations represented by the 'Olim Association' – Telfed being one of them. These organisations are the natural partners of the Jewish Agency. They are the ones that ensure a smooth and successful absorption for all Olim and are the ones that remain in touch with the Olim after their Aliyah."

Since the formation of Telfed in 1948, and following the organization's experience in providing quality Klita (absorption) services over the years, other nationalities have turned to Telfed for guidance, including the Australians, Yemenities, Russians, Iranians and most recently, the Dutch.  This week, Telfed's CEO Dorron Kline officially signed an agreement with senior representatives of "Irgun Olei Holland - IOH" to train a Dutch speaking Klita Counselor, in order to ensure the smooth Aliyah and Klita of immigrants from Holland.

On June 7th 2015, Ms. Dianna Yach, Chairperson and Director of the Mauerberger Foundation Fund, visited the Telfed offices. She was warmly welcomed by Telfed Chairman David Bloom, CEO Dorron Klein and COO Nava Lapid.  Also in attendance were Telfed’s Treasurer Harris Green, TECI Chairman Mel Cohen, Former Director Sid Shapiro, Fundraising Chairman Steve Handler and senior Telfed staff members. 

Telfed staff members were priviledged to attend a concert organised by the Ra'anana municipality this week to celebrate 25 years of Russian Aliyah to the city. The celebrations consisted of a special concert by the Ra'anana Symphony Orchestra dedicated to the wonderful culture that one million Olim brought to Israel in general and to the city of Ra'anana in particular.

Philip Braude gave a fascinating workshop last week at the Telfed offices about how to use LinkedIn to help grow business opportunites in Israel.

A group of new Olim gathered in the Telfed building this past week for a cheese and wine evening and an opportunity to mingle and meet each other.  It was wonderful for staff to get to know some of the olim on a more personal level and was also a great opportunity for mingling and setting the scene for new friendships to develop.  It was just a bonus that the evening also happened to be exceptionally entertaining and fun.  Below is an account by Max and Libby Strous who both attended the event.

A second workshop in a series was held this week at Telfed with the focus on training the organisation's future volunteer leadership.

The memorial service held at the South African War Memorial in the Lavi Forest on 14 May 2015 was extremely moving and conducted in a most appropriate and dignified manner. This service is arranged on a regular basis by JNF in conjunction with Telfed to honour the memories of South Africans who have lost their lives while serving with the Israeli Defence Forces.
 
 
On the 17 of May, the Telfed Ashkelon Regional Committee hosted a JNF tour from South Africa. The participants were joined by a number of South Africans living in Israel from as far afield as Jerusalem, Netanya and Ra'anana.
 

The Telfed HaSharon Regional Committee are planning a personal safety workshop tailored to the needs of teenage girls. The course will be led by highly-skilled professionals from El Ha-lev, an organization well known and experienced in running such courses across the county. The course is scheduled to start in September 2015. PRE-REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT IS ESSENTIAL to ensure your spot on this popular course!

Telfed Jerusalem, WITS Alumni and JNF held a well-attended event at the Weizmann Hall at the Jewish Agency building in Jerusalem, at which the guest speakers were Colonel Richard Kemp CBE, former commander of British forces in Afghanistan and Isla Feldman, Director of SAZF. Isla was joined by a JNF delegation from South Africa.
 
Now being run for the 3rd time… starting on June 8/9, this time in Modiin, this popular course on "Grant and Report Writing for Non Profits and Effective Donor Communication" can precipitate entry into a new career for those who aspire to make a living from grant-writing. 
 
Last Thursday, the incredible group of runners who ran "The Mountain to Valley Race" for Telfed last year set out again to participate in this unique and exhausting challenge! The Mountain to Valley race is a group relay race of around 215 km that takes approximately 20 hours to complete. The race begins at Tel Hai and finshes in the communal settlement of Timrat. 
 
The Telfed Rishon le’Zion Committee held a Yom Ha’Atzmaut Party this year organized by winner of the Telfed Volunteer of the Year Award, Beryl Schmidt. The party, which included a Braai and live entertainment, was well-attended with participants ranging from Southern African, Israeli and Spanish backgrounds all mixing together and having a great time.
Adopt-a-Savta offers a unique month-long volunteer opportunity one-on-one with Holocaust Survivors to make an immediate and real impact in their lives here in Israel. They are partnering with the Conference of Material Claims Against Germany in Tel Aviv to help Holocaust Survivors access additional financial support from the German Government. These Survivors need YOUR HELP to fill out their processing forms in English.
 

 

With much joy and celebration, Telfed held an inauguration ceremony for its newly refurbished building on Schwartz Street in Raanana on 20th April 2015.   The inauguration was attended by several members of the community, Telfed Staff and volunteers, Isrentco executives, the Building residents themselves and Raanana Mayor, Zeev Bielski.
 

On wednesday 22nd April, 2015 a Memorial Service was held at Sh'ar Ha'gai to remember the fallen from amongst the Machal Soldiers. Machal is an Acronym for "Mitnadvei Chutz La'Aretz" (overseas volunteers to the Israeli Army). Over the years, many Southern Africans have joined the IDF as volunteers and participated in Israel's many wars and defense missions.  At this special ceremony which took place on Yom HaZikaron we remeber the fallen Machal soldiers along with all the other fallen soldiers.  May their memories be blessed.

The Raanana Women's Circle are pleased to invite female colleagues to an exciting talk by Tzemach Bloomberg on the subject of "MACHAL" (Volunteers from Abroad) and their incredible contribution to the State of Israel from 1948 until today.  Approximately 4,700 Machalniks from 56 countries – men and women, Jews and non-Jews, volunteered to help Israel in its “War of Survival” in 1948. The Machalniks played a pivotal role not only in winning the war, but also in establishing the foundations on which the IDF was founded. Machalniks continue to play an essential role in the IDF today.

After the siren sounded on Yom Hashoa (Holocaust Remembrance Day) on 16th April, members of the public - together with Telfed Staff and volunteers, gathered in the Telfed boardroom for a moving ceremony to mark one of the saddest days in the Israeli calendar.

The Ashkelon Regional Committee presents a grand tour of Ashkelon on 17th May. The trip will include a tour of Ashkelon with Dr. Avi Sasson and Gad Sobol, a visit to the Water Desalination plant, a visit to and explanation of the Iron Dome by the Chief of Security of Ashkelon, Yossi Greenfeld, supper with local South Africans at the Holiday Inn and a visit and address by the Mayor of Ashkelon, Mr. Itamar Shimoni. Open to all Southern Africans - however, due to limited spaces, priority will be given to Ashkelon residents.

 

The Telfed Jerusalem Regional Committee together with WITS University Alumni Organisation are delighted to host  (as part of the JNF tour from SA) Colonel Richard Kemp (former commander of the British Forces in Afghanistan) and Isla Feldman (Director of SAZF Johannesburg) who will present "How the Jewish Community in South Africa battles the BDS”.  The event will take place on Tuesday 12th May 2015 at 8pm in the Weizmann Hall, Jewish Agency Building, 45 King George Street, Jerusalem.

 
Telfed - together with JNF South Africa, invite the community to attend a Memorial Ceremony in honour of the 87 Southern African soldiers who fell defending the State of Israel on Wed 13th May at 15.00 at the Memorial Site inside the South African Forest, (next to Kibbutz Lavi and the Golani Junction).  The venue will be marked with direction signs on the day.

Telfed held a Friday-morning seminar in February targeted at potential volunteers.  The purpose of the seminar was to recruit a new generation of volunteers who can inject fresh ideas and enthusiasm into the organisation as well as to hear feedback about the ways in which Telfed can better serve the Southern African and Australian populations in Israel.
 

Telfed staff members Dorron Kline (CEO), Sidney Shapiro (former CEO and recently retired Head of Fundraising) and Nikki Leviner (Head of Resource Development) were privileged to attend the celebrations for Morris Kahn's 85th Birthday this past week. Kahn, a former South African is a world-renowned businessman and great philanthropist as well as being a dear friend of Telfed. 

On his recent two week South Africa trip, Dorron Kline was privileged to meet with some of the teens participating in the South African Diller Teen Fellows Programme.  This year, at the initiation of Telfed, the prestigious programme has reached South Africa for the first time.

Telfed CEO Dorron Kline travelled to South Africa this month for a two week visit where he was a guest of the Israel Centre at the annual SAZF conference in Sandton. He had the opportunity to meet with many community leaders - thus building bonds between the Southern African communities in Israel and South Africa, raising awareness of Telfed’s fundamental role for South African Jewry and building the groundwork for many fruitful collaborations.  Dorron was accompanied for part of the trip by the newly elected Chairman of Telfed’s Fundraising Committee, Steve Handler, whose professionalism and motivation added great value in strengthening the connections between the two communities.

On Sunday 22 March, several representatives of Telfed attended a heart-warming Children’s Pesach Seder held in the Maksam Centre in Hadera. Nearly 50 primary school children of Ethiopian origin enjoyed singing traditional Pesach songs (including Echad Mi Yodea) with great enthusiasm, asking the Four Questions and reading about the Four Sons.

As we look forward with excitement and gratitude to our Seder with family and friends, we want to share a short story with you.  "My name is Lynn* and I'm a mother to three wonderful children.  Our aliyah from SA was filled with hope and enthusiasm, as we looked to a new life in Israel: but behind closed doors, things were very different..."

On Friday the 20th March, Telfed hosted a very special luncheon to honour Lone soldiers of Australian and Southern African origin currently serving in Israel. This was the first of what will become a bi-annual event to acknowledge and thank lone soldiers. This Project was instigated by Nicci Diamond-Levenstein, in memory of her late father, Aubrey Diamond Z"L, and was organised with the help of Susan Sharon, Aliyah and Klita Counselor at Telfed.

South-African born Elad Glick, has thought of a unique way to both celebrate his forthcoming barmitzvah and also give back to Israel society. A keen sports fan, Elad has decided to participate in 13 races throughout this year leading up to his Bar mitzvah and to collect sponsorship for every km that he runs.  The money he raises will be donated to Schneider Children’s hospital and will be used to purchase Playstations and other toys for the children’s ward so that children who are sick or undergoing treatment can have some ”fun”. 

Celebrating Kibbutz Yizreel's 40th Anniversary of the Rugby Club, a special gathering of past rugby players of the team will take place on the 20th March, this year.  All those who once played for the Yizreel team are invited.  Many former players from accross the world are making an effort to join us on this day – from South Africa, England the U.S.A. and more.
The event will take place on Friday, 20th March, at 14.00 in the "Boykies" Club house on Yizreel's rugby field.  After the official welcome, friendly matches will take place.  In the evening, a festive meal will be held in the Yizreel clubroom, attended by all our guests, with greetings for all those who contributed to the founding of our Rugby Club.

Register for IsraelGrants Fundraising and Grant-Writing Course In English and Hebrew.  Starts April 29, 2015 (English) or May 6 (Hebrew). Develop fundraising and grant writing skills, deal with basic principles of working with foundations, corporations, solicitation of individual donors, fundraising materials, websites and online funding in Israel and abroad.
 

“Dor le’Dor  have partnered with the National Union of Israeli Students and another volunteer organization, ”Kol Hadorot Le’dor” in order to provide assistance to senior citizens who would like to go out and vote but who find it too difficut to do so without assitance. 

The Raanana Women's Circle paid a very enjoyable visit to The Rubin Museum in Tel Aviv this month. The museum is an artist-house-museum which was formerly the home of the painter Reuven Rubin.  A choice selection of Rubin's paintings were on display.

Charles Abelsohn and David Kaplan represented the Truth be Told Commitee (TbT) last month at a meeting with MP Michael Bagrain, of the South African Democratic Alliance (DA) Party - and one of only two Jews in the South African Parliament.  Bagrain had organized and led a DA 10-man delegation to Israel that included Jews, Christians, a Muslim and a Hindu.  

Some 200 English speakers attended a combined Truth be Told – Beth Protea sponsored  pre-election panel discussion at the Beth Protea Retirement facility. Seven parties were represented, in an efficiently managed debate by MC David Kaplan.
 
 

Dorron Kline, Telfed's CEO, was amongst several guest speakers last monday at The Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) 'Board of Governors' meeting held in Jerusalem. Dorron drew on his experiences as CEO of Telfed to emphasize to participants the importance of appropriate Klitah (absorption) measures, in order to ensure successful Aliyah and called for full responsibility of absorption through volunteers to be given back to the Olim Associations.

In March, all PRAS students will participate in a mid-year seminar.  The regional coordinators will conduct a total of eight seminars in the cities of Be'er Sheva, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Ra’anana and Acre.  

Registration forms for students who would like to join Telfed’s PRAS programme in the 2015/16 academic year will be available for submission through Telfed’s website between 7th June & 1st August 2015.

Telfed was represented at a special evening performance of the Israel Symphony Orchestra in Rishon Le'Zion by the Chairman of the Telfed Rishon Le'Zion Regional Committee, Beryl Schmidt and Telfed's CEO, Dorron Kline. Thirty Ambassadors were invited, including the Ambassadors of South Africa and Australia, together with senior representatives of Telfed and ESRA.

We are looking for volunteers to represent the SA community by helping to man the Telfed stall for the 2015 Raanana Race (20.3.15). This event is one of the great highlights of the sporting calendar in Israel, with thousands of people from all over the country taking part, including wounded veteran IDF soldiers.  We'd love to see you!

At the instigation the Head of the Telfed Jerusalem Regional Committee, Roy Scher, and the Head of the new Telfed Jerusalem Youth Regional Committee, Daniel Winer, Telfed Staff travelled to Jerusalem this past week to meet with and advise young Southern African and Australian Olim.  
 
Former Southern African Flamenco dancer, Silvia Duran, who is a resident of the Telfed Building in Amishav St, Tel Aviv, was this year awarded the prestigious Arik Einstein Prize for her contribution to Israeli culture and the arts.  
 

A large number of ex-Southern Africans gathered in Netanya this month to enjoy a hot cup of coffee and listen to Rabbi Moshe Silberhaft, the "Travelling Country Communities Rabbi". There were many new faces, as Netanya has become a popular destination for retirees. 

Former Southern African and ex-chairman of Telfed, Solly Sacks, was recently presented with a Sefer Torah by World Mizrachi as a token of appreciation for his 24 years of service to the organization, as its Director General.

The community joins with the Walt family in mourning the sad loss of Dylan Walt, a lone soldier who made Aliyah last year to serve in the IDF. A memorial service, in which Telfed was represented by Batya Shmukler, took place on 23 January at the Mercaz Klita in Raanana.

Telfed awards student bursaries to ten students at the Kaye teaching College in Beer Sheva and awards a significant research grant to renowned Professor, Iris Shai of Ben Gurion University for her pioneering work on Diabetes. Telfed was able to support both worthy casues through the generosity of The Goldberg Family, formerly of Leigh Ranch, Odzi Zimbabwe, Trust set up by the Goldberg family. 

TbT (Truth be Told) together with Beth Protea are holding a pre-election panel debate in English on 26 February at Beth Protea, which will be attended by members of the political parties and will help you to feel more informed before casting your vote.

Telfed – the SA Zionist Federation (Israel) wishes to express shock and dismay about those who perpetrated such a heinous crime against a Palestinian youth Mohammed Abu Khudair.  He was abducted last week from the Jerusalem neighborhood where his family lives and reportedly was burned alive by his abductors.

In late June, TELFED hosted a reception honouring Philip Krawitz (Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the United Jewish Campaign) and welcoming Alison Katzeff on her first visit to Telfed. The "Philip and Michele Krawitz Annual Bursary" was launched in appreciation of Philip's exceptional dedication to Telfed. Telfed Vice Chair Batya Shmukler hosted the ceremony.

We are in the annual period where emotions in Israel are on a roller coaster from the high of Pesach, the depths of Yom Hashoa through Yom Hazikaron and then back up to Yom Haatzmaut. 

Following the success of the lecture in December 2013 on attitudes towards mental illness and services for the mentally ill in Israel, a second informative evening has been planned.

Telfed recently honoured its outgoing director Sid Shapiro with a 70th Birthday and retirement party and the evening was enjoyed by a crowd of well over 200 people.

February’s meeting was really great. Thanks so much to Louise Braverman who opened her lovely home and welcomed us in. We had a few new ladies who came to join us, and hopefully will become regulars.

On the back cover of Colin Froman's book "Right of Return – a history of Modern Israel" he writes that "this book is written for the now generation, including my grandchildren, to give them a sense of their history. Last week Telfed’s representatives,  Dave Bloom  (Chairman),  Sidney Shapiro  (Director),  Susan Sharon  (Endowments and Scholarships),  Dana Levy- Tavor  (Head of the  Pras Programme) and David Conroy  (Chairman, Telfed regional committee) had the pleasure of presenting this year’s Sarah Goldberg award for research in diabetes to Dr. Eli. C. Lewis and his team at the Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva.  

On the 30th December, Telfed in association with Beth Protea held the second in the two part-series of ‘Medicine and the Holocaust’ at Beth Protea.

On a bright and sunny morning, 32 members of the Woman's circle boarded a bus en route for the Modiin area, the land of the Maccabim. Everyone was equipped with good cheer and lots of "padkos" and goodies for the soldiers we were to meet later in the day.

Members of the Telfed Aliyah Projects Committee paid a visit to the city of Haifa in order to ascertain the possibility of a potential building project for new and veteran Southern African Olim. 

Telfed was honoured with a visit to its offices in Schwartz Street, Ra'anana by the new Director of the Ministry of Absorption, Advocate Oded Forer.

Telfed – the South African Zionist Federation (Israel) and the Zionist Federation of Australia (ZFA) have announced the signing of a joint partnership in which Telfed will provide klita (absorption) services to Australian olim on behalf of the ZFA.
