Update from South Africa

Telfed was honoured to host Hagai Dagan at its EXCO (Executive Council) meeting, held at the Telfed offices in Ra’anana on Monday 29 January 2018.

Hagai was the past Jewish Agency Community Shaliach to Cape Town, serving from 2014 – 2017 and was replaced by the current Shlicha, Michal Ilan.

Hagai presented a fascinating study of Zionist Education in the Diaspora in general and Cape Town in particular.

Using a graph analysis, he explored together with the EXCO participants, how one empowers a pupil’s engagement with Israel.

“The aim of Zionist Education needs to be to bring the pupils from a low to high engagement with Israel, by dealing with the complex issues that Israeli society faces and not by shying away from such topics” he said.

Hagai felt that during his Shlichut, he had (in cooperation with Herzlia Schools and the youth movements) brought about a higher quality of engagement with Israel, amongst the Jewish youth of Cape Town.

Telfed wishes Hagai much success in his new position in Israel. He is an advisor at the Maof Institute – a government body which provides guidance to small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Best wishes to his replacement, JAFI Shlicha Michal Ilan, as she embarks on her journey of quality engagement with the Cape Jewish Community.
