The Perfect Picnic

A communal family picnic was held during Chol Hamoed Pesach on Kibbutz Nir Eliyahu. The picnic was open to all of our olim, and attended by residents from as far afield as Jerusalem and Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu. Initiated by Nir Eliyahu resident and South African olah, Valerie Chikly, participants were offered a variety of entertainment options – from a puppet show to an adult-focused tour of the kibbutz.

At Telfed, we recognise the importance of community, welcoming new olim and reconnecting with old friends. The kibbutz is in close proximity to some of the olim hubs – including Kfar Saba, Ra'anana and Hod Hasharon, but we encourage our community, countrywide, to participate in these events.

Kibbutz Nir Eliyahu has wonderful facilities that allowed for a fun-filled day out with picnic tables, a children's playground, animal farm and large grassy area for a game of soccer or frisbee.  The children and a number of accompanying adults were given a tour of the animal farm, which boasts a camel, baboons, peacocks, goats, sheep and monkeys, and was a big hit. The less energetic were treated to a short walk to a small outdoor amphitheatre on the kibbutz where another South African oleh and kibbutz resident, Rafi Bortz, entertained his audience with stories about the kibbutz and its history.

As lunch time approached, picnic baskets were opened and grannies and grandpas, moms, dads and kids all settled down to enjoy a meal in the outdoors. While the adults relaxed after lunch, Valerie entertained the kids in her specially built puppet theatre after which she taught them how to make beautiful little owls using old pine cones. This was a great hit with parents and kids alike.

Southern African and Australian Olim no longer have to look, with envy, at the annual Beit Shemesh event, as we hope to make this a regular feature on the Telfed Calendar. Keep an eye out for future picnic announcements – planning is already underway for another great picnic at Nir Eliyahu! Special thanks to Valerie, Rafi, Noemie and Peter for initiating and organising a wonderful event!
