Midreshet Torah Ve’Avoda - '86 graduates
At the beginning of January 2017, a group of Bnei Akiva graduates from South Africa and Australia gathered in Beit Shemesh in order to celebrate 30 years since their gap year programme in Israel in 1986. The programme they came on, which still runs today, is known as MTA – Midreshet Torah Ve’Avoda, which combined Yeshiva & Midrasha study with working the land at Moshav Massuot Yitzchak, near Ashkelon.
The majority of the forty MTA ’86 participants have subsequently made Aliyah. The gathering included swapping faded photo albums & wonderful memories, a slide show of photos from 30 years ago, a quiz and a potluck supper. “Great to get together and even greater that we still recognize one another,” was a quip that was heard throughout the evening.
A surprise visit from an Australian MTA ’86 graduate, who came to be at her son’s IDF ceremony, was particularly exciting for the gathering, as many had not seen her in 30 years!
“Let’s start planning for the 40th!” was the clear decision at the end of a very enjoyable evening.
