Ben Gurion once declared that, for Israel to survive, we have to go South... !
We would therefore like to invite you to come and travel with us, once a week, due south from Jerusalem via Road 60 into the Judean Hills. It will take us past Beit Lehem, Gush Etzion and the junction to Kiryat Arba and Hevron. There a colorful sign announces: “Welcome to Har Hevron” as the terrain dramatically changes and we start climbing a narrow road that twists and turns along rugged hills and deep valleys.
The words, “I will cause you to ride on the heights of the Land”, from the book of Yeshayahu come to mind as one gets a glimpse of the Dead Sea down below in the distance, the Mountains of Edom to the east and the Negev desert stretching further southward.
You will meet the inhabitants of the 18 communities that straddle these hilltops – Ma’ale Hever, Karmel, Maon, Sussya, Yatir and more, and they will tell you about the challenges and the glory of living in Har Hevron – the Biblical heartland of Eretz Yisrael.
